Ocean with David Attenborough: A Special Screening
Before sailing with David Attenborough across the world’s oceans, we invite you to look beneath the surface of our own sea.
Next Friday, 18 September at 20:00, Zadar audiences will see two short documentaries by local filmmaker Igor Goić of Kreathia Film. The films tell two very different stories, but both are rooted in the underwater world, its exploration and the importance of protecting it.
The screening will take place at the Educational and Presentation Centre for Underwater Archaeology, located in the former Church of St Nicholas. The evening will continue with the screening of Ocean with David Attenborough.
From a weekend trip to a festival selection
Whispers Beneath the Waves began almost by accident.
What was planned as a weekend break on Dugi Otok became an opportunity to capture enough underwater footage for a short documentary. Igor had originally set out to search for an underwater cave near the islet of Mežnja. Instead, he turned his camera towards the rich marine life of the shallows, continuing the filming at the Brbišćica sea cave and Zmajevo Oko.
The film grew into an atmospheric portrait of the underwater landscapes and life found along the coast. Michael White later joined the project as narrator, adding another layer to this intimate exploration of the sea.
What began as a “test” film has since been officially selected by the Neum Underwater Film Festival.
Preserving an underwater heritage site
The second documentary was created in collaboration with the International Centre for Underwater Archaeology in Zadar, with which Igor has worked on several projects.
At its centre is one of the region’s most valuable underwater heritage sites: the wreck of the Junkers Ju 87 “Stuka” aircraft. Exceptionally well preserved and located at a relatively accessible depth, the wreck offers a remarkable insight into the past beneath the sea.
The film also documents conservation work carried out at the site, contributing to a wider conversation about how underwater cultural heritage can be protected and preserved for future generations.
