Izazov
Zlarin Island, celebrated for its natural beauty and cultural heritage, faces critical challenges in the management and preservation of its freshwater resources and biodiversity. One of its historic karst ponds—once a vital local source of freshwater—has fallen into disrepair, with leaks and collapsed dry stone walls preventing it from filling sufficiently. The declining state of this pond endangers the rich biodiversity it supports and risks losing traditional customs intertwined with its existence. On islands where freshwater is a precious commodity, such degradation threatens not only wildlife habitat but also the sustainability of the community, especially as Zlarin pursues sustainable tourism and greater environmental stewardship.
Naše rješenje
This project led by Tatavaka Association aims to restore and re-establish the function of Zlarin’s historic pond, making it once again a reliable freshwater source. The initiative will:
-
Repair and restore the pond: Assess leaks, rebuild collapsed dry stone walls, and use natural materials to ensure effective water retention.
-
Protect habitat and biodiversity: By revitalizing the pond, the habitat will be enhanced, encouraging the return of native animal species and supporting broader ecosystem health.
-
Raise awareness: Community engagement activities will highlight the value of Zlarin’s natural and cultural heritage, fostering stewardship and pride.
-
Promote sustainability: Once restored, the pond will serve as an enduring reminder of sustainable resource management, linking tradition to modern environmental principles.
