Poštovani prijatelji i ljubitelji dalmatinskih otoka,

As summer peaks here in Dalmatia, we are happy to share the latest news, achievements, and upcoming opportunities at DIEF.

We’ve just confirmed our latest grants, which you can find in this newsletter. Our Crowdfunder campaign is live for another couple of weeks, so please help us spread the word!

If you haven’t already, make sure to check out our 2023-2025 brochure we published in May.

We are making a real difference thanks to your continued support.

We’re excited to share that our ReefQuest Crowdfunder has gathered great momentum! We officially launched it before the E1 Series’ Blue Impact Dialogues, where we showcased DIEF’s work and the ongoing campaign.

🤿 Our ReefQuest project has entered its second phase after a successful first run. Donations will help support scientific monitoring, youth education, and volunteer expeditions. Our grantee, KPA Zadar Diving Association, will be able to fund the needed equipment, fieldwork, and document underwater changes.

The Crowdfunder runs through August 14th with a €10,000 fundraising goal. We’re almost at 30% of the total and need your help. Last week, Croatian media were essential in spreading the news, and we couldn’t be more grateful.

Heritage for the Future – Economic Valorisation of Indigenous Olive Varieties in Vela Luka is a project led by the MIRO Association. The project will strengthen the capacity of NGOs to use digital tools in agriculture, connect local associations for joint heritage preservation, and develop sustainable cooperation models.

🫒 It builds on the grantee’s local supply chain mapping project and events promoting the geographical origin of olive oil on Korčula.

NGO Tatavaka’s Conservation of Water Resources and Biodiversity of Zlarin focuses on raising awareness of the value of Zlarin’s natural and cultural heritage. It will do so through the restoration and re-establishment of one of the island’s ponds as a local source of freshwater.

🏝️ Due to Zlarin’s beauty, traditions, and orientation towards sustainable tourism, the pond could become a marker of these once its function is restored and it‘s properly marked.

Refill Hvar

. project aims to tackle single-use plastic waste on Hvar by promoting the use of reusable bottles and Croatia’s high-quality tap water. Since its launch, the grantee Moj Škoj has:

🚰 Installed nine public water refill stations at key tourist sites across Jelsa, Vrboska, Ivan Dolac, and Zavala.

🚰 Organised local clean-ups, which have removed significant amounts of plastic waste from beaches.

🚰 Conducted educational campaigns to inform tourists and accommodation providers about the benefits of using tap water and the environmental impact of plastic bottles.

🚰 Partnered with environmental organisations and local authorities to support broader sustainability goals for the island.

These coordinated actions not only reduce plastic pollution but also raise awareness of Hvar’s valuable natural resources, helping ensure a cleaner, greener future for residents and visitors alike.

Plastic-Free Croatian Island

. project based on Dugi Otok continues to promote reducing single-use plastic by encouraging the use of reusable bottles and tap water. We are grateful for the growing support from residents, businesses, and visitors committed to protecting the island’s beautiful natural environment.

♻️ Through educational campaigns and collaboration with local partners, the project aims to foster a sustainable mindset and reduce plastic pollution across the Dalmatian islands.

Permakultura Dalmacija organised the beach clean-up as an outside class activity for pupils from Hvar elementary school on May 8th. Besides cleaning the beach, participants supplied materials for future upcycling workshops, too.

They also held an art workshop called Little Works of Art from Waste, which was part of the Night of Fortresses Goes Green day event. The activity took place on May 9th on Fortica, a fortress on top of a hill above the town of Hvar. Over 40 participants had a chance to creatively reuse the items collected from the beach the day before.

Your generosity, enthusiasm, and commitment drive everything we do. Thank you for being an essential part of the DIEF community.

Wishing you a wonderful summer,

☀️ The DIEF Team ☀️
