Spring 2025 Newsletter

Dear Friends and Supporters,

As we welcome the beginning of spring, nature reminds us how much we depend on its birdsong, longer days, and warmer weather.

What would we do without it? Would staying in winter’s grey embrace lift our spirits as spring does? Rachel Carson explored these questions in her groundbreaking book Silent Spring, which paved the way for our Foundation and many others to walk on today.

With our communities interconnected across online and offline platforms, we aim to magnify their voices so they may never experience silence.

In this newsletter, we introduce our two new grants, update you on our ongoing (and completed) ones, and prepare to welcome new applicants.

Here’s to enjoying a wonderful spring together!

The DIEF Team

Roots of Resilience aims to support the community in adopting environmentally friendly gardening practices that enhance soil health, conserve resources, and boost local food production.

Our grantee, Samotvorac Society, wants to empower the Silba community. They conduct workshops teaching practical and scalable techniques for vegetable gardening, developing local seeds, and cultivating olives and fruit.

Small Island Repairs tackles waste management on Hvar by introducing a culture of sustainability. Mindful consumption, repair, and reuse is the centre of the ongoing workshops.

Upcoming workshops will be held in April and May using the materials collected from previous activities. The grantee Permakultura Dalmacija focuses on teaching children and their families about the 5 R’s (Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repair, and Recycle).

The project aspires to instil lifelong sustainable habits, protect local ecosystems, and reduce the impact of waste on marine and terrestrial habitats.

Before we continue with our exciting project updates, we want to introduce you to our newest team member! Maša Pavičić started as our Communications & Fundraising Coordinator a few weeks ago.

Passionate about communication, creativity, and the environment, Maša’s valuable input has already made a stride at DIEF. Her previous work includes managing content for international clients, writing for her culture/travel blog, and guiding tours.

Plastic-Free Croatian Island

Sunce association and Natura Jadera organized a workshop as part of the Plastic-Free Croatian Island project. They presented the survey results on single-use plastics used in the tourism sector on Dugi Otok they conducted last summer.

The decision is to restrict single-use plastics for businesses operating in protected areas of Dugi Otok. Implementation starts for all the contracts for concession approvals in the upcoming summer season in the Telašćica Nature Park area.

Revival of Historical Paths

Moj Škoj Association is hard at work to re-introduce historical paths along the island of Hvar. By connecting the town of Jelsa to its southern villages, the project addresses the challenge of waste separation, using bio-waste for compost production.

The team has roughly cleared the entire path and created informational signposts with they’ll mount along the route. They’ve designed the resting places where benches will be installed next.

Enhancing Sustainable Development and Nature Preservation on the Island of Korčula
MIRO NGO has issued a peer-reviewed technical report that summarizes the key findings of the maps and proposes a list of recommendations per stakeholder category.

Refill Hvar – Pour it up for Less Plastic

To prevent more plastic (bottles) this upcoming summer season and those to come, this initiative is here to set an example for sustainability in tourism.

Together with their partner Sunce Association, the Jelkom utility company, and volunteers, Moj Škoj is organising a major clean-up activity for May 20th. The water fountains are in manufacture.

The project successfully achieved its goals of mapping Cladocora caespitosa habitats, standardizing field data collection, and strengthening cooperation between the researchers and the local diving community.

The KPA Zadar Association has laid the groundwork for future monitoring efforts, and raised awareness regarding the importance of protecting marine ecosystems and preserving the biodiversity of the Adriatic Sea.
